Maybe this isn't the same thing, but on a recent trip to Japan, tee shirts were clues about the days' activities. Like the day I had one kid in a tee shirt with Japanese deer on it and we went to Nara to see the wild deer. Or the Japanese monkeys shirt for wild monkeys day. Or the dress up like ninjas day. Etc. I found several appropriate shirts at Tea Collection. And only did it 3-4 times in a few weeks.

Perhaps this is a variation on what's being discussed, but with kids it can be fun.

Would I buy an I <3 NYC shirt before going to NYC. Approximately never.

It's strange to wear branded clothing in general, OP, but especially for this. Why would you advertise you've been to OBX?

No. I’d only buy it at the destination. In reality, I wouldn’t buy it unless I was freezing and needed something when I was out after dinner.

Why can’t you buy online and another one there?

Not in advance but I have bought it online once we get back multiple times. Eg,

- kid didn’t find a shirt they liked but really wanted one from this location. I did not want to waste time looking for a souvenir shirt.
- kids wanted to buy light sabers in Disney. I didn’t want to carry them. We bought online so they arrived the day after we got home.
