Ours is 9:30-noon on the last day (85 kids and they will all make speeches!) and then there’s a school picnic. This year I have a 5th grader so I planned for the day off months ago.

OP, if you or your kid had to have a surgical proceeder that conflicted with your husband's weekly meeting, would he be able to miss it? If yes, then he can miss it for this. He needs to get over himself and set some reasonable boundaries with work. It's not like your kid has one of these every other week. We're talking about one ceremony in what, 6 years? Come on.

My response would be different if your husband was a shift worker paid by the hour who didn't get vacation or personal leave. Much more sympathetic to that situation, where missing work might mean your paycheck is short or you lose your job.

Ours is in the evening, but teachers are working outside their hours to be there. Someone is going to have to sacrifice. Either it is the parents getting time off or the teacher arranging evening childcare and working a 12-hour day.

Both 5th and 8th grade promotion ceremonies are held in the evening in our cluster. Our 8th grade had to be split over two nights but they are still doing both in the evening so parents can attend.

Our 5th grade promotion ceremony is always on a weeknight evening. The students dress up (rare occasion). Everybody's family attends.

Same. Our's is at 1:00 and a big part of that is to make sure all the kids can get there. They go to school in the morning like usual and are all bussed to the ceremony location (our ES is big so we use the HS auditorium). Kids can go home with their parents afterwards or go back to the school. I would not expect teachers and administration to give up their evening for the ceremony.

Honestly, a standing meeting with senior executives is the exact type of meeting you can miss. It not like it's the only chance. If your DH was sick, he'd miss the meeting and not think anything of it.

My kids go to a K-8 school and the promotion ceremony for the 8th graders is in the morning at 10 am.

This. How is the answer to try to change the minds of 50+ people instead of the 4 people your DH has a meeting with?

I do get that things during the school day conflict with work. But my kids have been in school long enough that now I know I need to plan ahead and get in front of my time off. If your DH can't miss this meeting for his kid's event, then he is probably choosing to miss the meeting occasionally for OTHER reasons that he has deemed more important. That's his own issue.

Also, many kids understand as long as you show up when you can. My mother was a school principal at a different school and could never make anything during the day. But she came to 95% of events that happened in the evenings. I don't remember caring.
