No absolutely not. I’ve been in many group dinner situations and this has never been discussed until we are ready to leave. Then it’s the discussion.

Not subsidizing your excessive alcohol. Sounds like you go to these group outings expecting this and then get angry when someone doesn’t want to pay for your drinks. Pay for your own stuff!

I think people going out in a group generally should not sweat putting in an extra $5 (unless someone is really strapped). But an extra $50? That's bullpucky.


Absolutely – I’d say up to $20 is not a big deal. More than that because someone is not speaking up to say “hey, I need to put in more” is BS and the last time I go out with them.

I was the non-drinker at a fancy dinner when one friend ordered a $300 bottle of wine... luckily she picked up the tab, but I was pretty annoyed.

I have a repeat offender friend who has three glasses of wine with each lunch out - I drink water - then offers to pay the tip. And I subsidize her $50 worth of wine.

I was 20. It was a work thing. I was an admin and he was a senior manager. I barely knew him, but I had heard people call him cheap.

Seriously -- "seething"? I was disgusted. But I was in no position to call him out. Possibly a situation OP's DC might encounter.

What's the point of this thread if we're not supposed to share stories???

Maybe 25 years ago I quit drinking and went out with a group of friends. The wine and booze flowed. At the end, the bill was enormous and some said just split it like always. Except I wasn’t about to kick in a couple hundred bucks when I ate maybe 50. Another person did pipe up and said it wasn’t fair to me and everything was adjusted (thankfully).

If you want separate checks, please, I am begging you, tell your server at the BEGINNING of the meal!!!!!! It makes it so much easier for them (and you, at the end). Some restaurants also have a limit on how many cards you can split a check.
