Call your congress person’s office. They will contact the passport service for you to schedule an appointment. We were in this situation twice (for teen kids). Our congress person’s office (Jamie Raskin) was super helpful. They helped us schedule same-day passport appointments.

LOL, he feels terrible about it now. He’s just super busy at work so I’m not going to divorce him over this just YET! We had a conversation about renewing a year ago when he had a UK work trip and remember saying, we still have plenty of time…yeah back then we did!

We’re going to try to get that 14 day apt. Testing out that time frame, it’s looking like possible apt within a few days, so fingers crossed. Glad this post helped at least one person to be more aware of these expiration dates.

OP, you still don't make the date, of course, but the actual rule for the Schengen Area is that your passport has to be valid for 90 days past the date of your return ticket.

The "6 month rule" is common, but for many countries it's 3 months, and for some it's just "non expired passport"

Just be aware that depending on when your flight is, you won't actually get the passport on the same day. I had an appointment to get a passport yesterday, and since my flight isn't until next Thursday, they told me to come back on Monday to pick it up. It's likely only "same day" if you are literally flying out on the same day, or the following day. But I wouldn't put it off that long.


Oh wow! That’s good to know! Crazy to make the process so complicated. What if you lived an hour away? Bad experience to have to go twice. Safe travels to you!

You have to make an appointment though. You can’t just show up.

Are you in the area? If you REALLY cut it close you can go to the DC passport office downtown as long as you're traveling within 14 days. We've done that a couple of times (name changes, new babies, etc.) and we work downtown so each time was relatively painless.

This is completely unnecessary. You have plenty of time for an regular expedited application.


You are way too confident with your claims based on the available info.

Op hasn’t said what day they actually depart- just that it’s in early June and more than 14 days away.

The current estimated wait time for an expedited passport application is 2-3 weeks. While it’s great that one or more dcumers have anecdotally gotten theirs more quickly recently, if the trip is in 3 weeks or less I wouldn’t recommend betting one’s vacation on being similarly lucky.
