Temple and Drexel are quite different. Temple's neighborhood is terrible. Drexel's is a bit better in that Drexel + Penn create a huge student population and their neighborhood seems to support that population.

But since your kid wants a city school, I'm guessing you already know about the neighborhoods.

Temple is a WONDERFUL university. They had 9 Fulbright scholars this year! It's big, diverse, and fun. Full of talented, scrappy kids. Philly employers love it.

Drexel is much more tied to engineering in most people's minds. The co-op program is extremely well-regarded. Their academic calendar is a little unconventional. And the fact that most kids do multiple co-ops means your friends/roommates are sometimes just gone for a semester. This works well for some kids, less well for others.

I am not as familiar with Philly neighborhoods as my DS Can you speak more about Temple? As much as I would love for him to stay in state, no way he will get into VTech or W&M. I don't mind paying out of state tuition but I do want for him to be safe.

Look at VCU for an urban school with engineering that's more forgiving test score wise.

I was not too keen on how they handled the recent protests, things turned violent at VCU.

Students walked out of the graduation peacefully. What violence are you referencing? Seems strange to discount VCU entirely when it seems the obvious in-state choice for your kid.

Have you considered WPI or UVM? Or LACs with engr might offer good merit -- York, Elizabethtown, Manhattan.
