In state VA. Got in W&M and VaTech (Engineering). Rejected UVA Engineering. Also got direct admit to CS at UMD with merit. Of that bunch, was choosing UMD - the direct admit and the quality of the program.

Ultimately Going to large OOS T10 public with Engineering/CS program.

I know quite a few in-state kids who didn't get into UVA but got into a T20 school in the past 3-4 years.

Same.

+1 for U South Carolina

South Carolina is not USC. USC = white horse and LA.

In Virginia, Maryland, and DC, USC is South Carolina

USC (South Carolina) existed before CA was a state.

irrelevent. USC is University of S Cal and U So
Carolina was UofSC until lastyear. Now there are two USCs. You could have googled that

UMD honors due to direct admit CS. Would love VT but they don't have direct admit. Did not apply to UVA. Didn't feel the CS department was strong enough.

This is true for the wealthy and poor. For families with HHI between $200K and $400K, and especially those without large 529s, no financial aid from higher ranked schools makes UVA a great deal. Lots of families make that trade off.

Sure. But even from the middle class, anyone going to a highly selective school, probably turned down in-state tuition at UVA/VT. I agree more middle class families will choose to forgo the highly selective school than the wealthy, the poor, or those who have saved aggresively.
