At my kids’ middle school, some kids take it very seriously and some not at all. It depends on how much they like sports. As for changing, you can change and there are locker rooms, but no one chooses to and it seems impossible for the school to both supervise kids in that state and deal with kids who are trans and wouldn’t be comfortable changing with peers. As long as my kid wears deodorant, that’s all I care about for PE. HS PE is more of a joke than MS FWIW.

If you've ever stepped foot on MCPS MS property during PE, it is dismal. It's co-taught, so two teachers just talking to each other while kids sit around the field/tennis courts/basketball courts. They blow a whistle every once in awhile to pretend to do something.

Thanks for considering McPS. I have one kkd in a Ms and two that finished. To answer your question, my impression is that they don’t have a great way to supervise the kids and so the kids have just collectively quit the changing thing. I remember from my own years, girls got bullied for not having breasts or having weird underwear, at least one girl got knifed while undressed, and the female gym teacher was beyond creepy and always touching people or yelling at them. Not having to change avoids all that.

I don’t think it’s true that kids just ignore Pe. For my son, it was a highlight of the day and o know he got along great with the PE teachers—they still ask about him. For my girls, it was more mixed — it really depended on what activity they were doing and the teacher. I think one challenge is that if you do skmething like basketball, some kids are going to be really good and others will not be, and then they got mocked by the good kids. So those units are miserable for the majority of kids and they will often try to sit out rather than be made fun of. Things like archery and pickleball or weightlifting seem to work better. In my experience, the kids respond really well to teachers that are enthusiastic and empathetic. One of my kids is still talking about a gym teacher that made her run the mile on crutches because she had forgotten the note excusing her—he had sort of a drill sergeant mentality, at least when it came to the girls. But I know that many of the gym teachers are very beloved by the kids and the kids really appreciate the time to just play with their friends, as the don’t get much opportunity to do that once they hit MS.

MCPS teacher here and...just hahaha, it's so amazing how the same people will sit here and bash MCPS and simultaneously defend it to death. Pick a side. No wonder no one wants to work in this district. All of my colleagues talk about leaving on a daily basis. It's mostly due to parents. I mean, look in the mirror when your kid has no teachers left.

You're not a teacher. "Strange district" used by that poster. ALL of MCPS families want to make schools overcrowded. That does not mean defending MCPS.

Parent here. Why on earth do you insist on driving people away from MCPS? I have former MCPS teacher friends who found jobs in different counties and are infinitely happier because they aren't surrounded by people like you. It's honestly just sad and really pathetic to watch. Do better because right now, you're the worst of the worst, and the problem in MoCo.

OP here- definitely not. You're truly not the detective you think you are. Is anyone on this board disputing the facts? No. Kids don't change out for PE. I'm sure anyone with a brain could easily get info on the state of public schools without creating fake posts on DCUM but I think this says a lot more about what YOU do if that's automatically where your brain goes.

Lockers to store binder, that cell phone you're not supposed to have, water bottle, menstrual items etc.

My son, when he was in middle school, was not required to change out but he was required to wear PE uniform on the days that he had gym which was black sweatpants or shorts and a gray shirt with sneakers. If they did not come dressed, they would be marked down and their grade would drop. I don’t think it’s necessary to change in and out. It’s too much time wasted, too much drama etc. as for why there are lockers, most likely because we had to change when we went to school back in the day.
