My high schooler has been applying to retail stores, restaurants and any business near us. Most are saying help wanted and are close to minimum wage but then tell him he needs to be 18 to work there. Try that if she really wants to work. Lots of applications anywhere convenient.

A lot of them will take who they can get, especially if it's someone with a food handler's certificate who can come back at Christmas break too. If the choice is someone who will quit in 3 months or 3 weeks, they'll take the former.

I work in a restaurant and while we wish for long term workers, we also hire for the summer season as the restaurant doubles in size. We rehire former workers often as most leave for school, but stay on good terms. Rehiring is easier than retraining.

Many years ago a relative asked me to cover for her walking dogs for the elderly. It was a retirement home on Connecticut Avenue right before Maryland starts. I had so much fun there. The residents wondered who I was, why I was there, and were eager to meet anyone and talk.
Lately I have been wondering how to get a job in one of those places or volunteer. I do have a job and my boss has hard time letting me go. While I asked for early retirement, he asked if I could work more as May is busy.
After 27 years in same service industry, I feel a change is due.
For the rest of the job seekers, please try restaurants.
