+1 SEL is not something I see people asking for more of. As for the wellness blocks…oy. Currently deciding between private and public for third DC (oldest went private, middle is at public but has special needs and is in a program with different schedules and expectations). This thread caught my eye because it’s very different than what my junior at a private is experiencing. MCPS effectively doing little to no instruction/accountability/meaningful activities in May or June is wild.

+1 my older kid now in college skipped school during these days. They got all 5s (except one in FL) on their APs, and graduated with a 4.0. unwgpa.

At first, I was reluctant to let them skip school; I've always been the type of parent that drilled into my kids "school is important; you need to go to school".

But, after what they told me about what goes on during these "wellness" blocks or whatever (15 min per class?), I said they could do what they wanted, as long as their grades don't tank, and they didn't. They aren't going to be learning much in that 15/20min, and most teachers will post stuff online for the kids to review anyways. My kids learn fine that way.

OP you can say dental or medical appointments without having to give details or say "sick" which is not ideal if the kid then shows up at the school.

Teacher here. Do what is best for your child. Unexcused absences are meaningless. There are no repercussions

Which school calls them "wellness blocks"? I haven't heard this before.

I agree. It is. But people insist they want it so MCPS keeps providing it.

Maybe the people like you who think it's shallow and intrusive need to tell MCPS more loudly that we don't want them investing their time and energy into SEL?

Blame MCPS for applying "wellness" to a broad range of things. Watching a movie or listening to classical music and playing with LEGOS is not a wellness block. Those are recreational activities.

My kids hate SEL learning at MCPS. It’s shallow or intrusive but not helpful.

OP I’m a parent who doesn’t believe in my child missing school, but would definitely
make an exception. If you want your kid to come in the afternoon but to just miss the morning wellness block try bad headache. My kid has 5 APs and I’d totally be fine if they wanted to do that.
