OP here - I understand the need to show rigor, but it's a tradeoff. He can either take Spanish V or he can take AP Chem. Can't fit both in.
Our kids counselor made a note in their file that there was a schedule conflict. She had a full load, 5 APs including Chem so very rigorous. She had 3 years of French in HS, one of them as a senior so no FL as a junior. She is in at a college that recommended 4 years. She is a stem major so that and the counselors note, and rigorous schedule made up for missing one year.

Colleges look at HS transcripts.
What’s the point of getting high school credit for advanced language classes in middle school if colleges won’t even consider the them?
Find a HS that will list what classes a kid took in middle school on a HS transcript ( even if "HS level").
Some high schools will barely list summer courses taken while in high school, especially if not taken at the high school itself.
Congrats for taking some HS classes in MS. Means absolutely Nothing to colleges.

OP, you should be more concerned about him getting -out- of college. College requirements for entrance are there for a reason. Will he have to take a FL in college to graduate? Depends. Research that and you'll know the college will view his application.

That poster does not realize that some districts put MS language classes on HS transcripts. Each college decides how to handle that. It is not like French 1 at MCPS is a more advanced class because it is labeled a HS class. I do think that taking 4 years of French in HS after 2 years in MS and getting to AP is different then starting with French 1 in 9th.

Three if STEM / Business major
Four if Humanities major.
Varies by college sometimes. For example, UVA wants STEM applicants to have at least 4 years of a foreign language. (Yes, even the UVA E School admissions is looking for this.)

+1 Mine took level IV as a junior, and now for 12th no higher level is being offered. CC says it will be fine.

For the most competitive colleges, the safest approach is 4 years world language or until the AP level, whichever happens 1st

My kid took AP foreign language in 10th grade. It freed up his 11th and 12th grade schedule to take other interesting classes. He did 2 years in HS, and three years in MS.
