I got this and was so disappointed with the actual lip balm. It was hard as a rock and did not feel very moisturizing.

I currently love the caudalie stick lip balm but for pretty packaging and some tint, I also enjoy this one by tarte. https://tartecosmetics.com/shop/quench-lip-rescue-770.html

For a splurge gift, I'd get the La Mer lip balm.

Hmm? I'm the PP and I've never had one break and I have several and have used up a couple of them as well. I don't tend to push it too high out of the tube ... maybe that is it?

No. Not for an older woman. Dior Lip Glow Oil is lip gloss suitable for younger women or girls. It will travel right up into every fine line around an older woman's lips and look horrific.
