We have lives and homes and access to medicine, food, knowledge, entertainment, beyond what kings could have dreamed of for virtually all human history. Torture, rape, and child labor were 100% legal and routine for millennia until about 5 minutes ago in historical terms (and still are in “Palestine” and most other third world hellholes you guys love so much). Ghengis Khan roamed an entire continent skull-f$cking every village he encountered. Countries with large social safety nets are also seeing precipitous declines in fertility. It's a nice story--that the lack of maternity leave and universal healthcare is preventing women from having kids--but even if true, it isn't the whole truth. Plenty of countries with strong social safety nets are also seeing low fertility rates. Sweden and Norway are both under 1.7. The mood is pessimistic, our government is not operating well, the future is uncertain, we are bombarded with negative messages all day (the environment, politics, pollution, health issues, declines in education, racial tensions). It's no wonder people don't feel like having babies. Kids used to be an asset, they would help run your business, farm your land, raise your other children, sew/cook/clean. Now they are a liability, taking huge portions of your wealth and using it to...I dunno, protest on college campuses?

While immigration can stave off the worst of the consequences like, a lack of people to take care of the elderly or pay any kind of tax into SSA, the culture as we know it will change. Diversity can be good, but it can also be tricky, especially when change happens very quickly. A big part of MAGA is a response to this sudden change in the makeup of the country. It's difficult for people to deal with sudden change and they resist it. When your doctor no longer speaks good English and your kids' school is full of families who need lots of resources that take away from yours, people are going to get resentful. It's a vicious cycle and I don't think the US is up to the task of managing it, based on our gov't.

I had one kid. I sometimes regret not having more because I like my culture and its emphasis on hard work and education, financial stability, volunteering, kindness, and the arts. But the culture will change, and the country along with it. Civilizations rise and fall. We are prioritizing our feelings over hard work right now and that's not a recipe for success.

This is an extraordinarily stupid comment. The Nordics and some Asian countries that provide generous leave or financial incentives are experiencing just as low if not lower fertility rates. Or do you find them to be “hostile and dangerous” too?
