If you look at the Naviance scattergram for schools like UVA, VT, and UMD where many TJ kids apply, you will see the horizontal line which indicates average GPA.

VT and UMD: 4.1 to 4.2

UVA: 4.3 to 4.3

So my best guess is the distribution is as follows:

4.0 and below: 15%

4.0 to 4.2: 25%

4.2 to 4.4: 45%

4.4 and above: 15%

This still the 2022 class that got in under old admissions with somewhat merit criteria. We wont see the scattergram data of lottery classes starting with 2025 for another two years.

In the freshman year when there aren't many weighted courses available, both weighted and unweighted GPAs tend to hover around 4.0. As students progress towards end of junior or early senior year, nearing the college application process, the GPA numbers derived from Naviance scattergrams can serve as a rough guide.

A high school counselor's primary objective is to make sure their students navigate high school without a mental health issue. Their focus isn't necessarily on encouraging students to enroll in rigorous coursework or achieve high GPAs to gain admission to top-ranked colleges, although this absolutely maybe the student's and their parents' goal. Counselors aim to encourage every student to do their personal best and cheer them as a "winner" in their own individual path, whether they are in the top 1% with 4.65 GPA or the bottom 1% with 3.25 GPA. Counselor's strive hard to tell students not to worry about their GPA or the GPA of their peers, as they have been trained to do so. But if counselor is still pressed to comment on student's class standing, their standard reply is "likely" in the top half or near there.

However, college admissions have limited seats and a ton of applicants to choose from, where GPA comparison becomes absolutely unavoidable. From that stance, data sources like Naviance serve as a better objective counselor than the cheer-leading counselor at any high school.
