PP you’re replying to and no, it isn’t. Not saying it’s not indicative of a weird bubble that OP is in, but for whatever reason these schools are suddenly popping up in discussion a lot among their social group and now OP is curious about them.

OP - where are you coming from?

At our K-8 - it changes year to year where a large number of kids go. One year may have a particularly strong class and send lots of kids to the more selective schools. Another year may have a bunch go to Bullis, another a bunch to Landon, or Holton, or Stone Ridge. It goes in waves.

You should look broadly and see for yourself which schools are a good match for your children. A really helpful way to do this is to visit a huge variety in the Fall a full year before you plan to be in the application cycle (so 7th if applying out in 8th or 5th of applying out in 8th). Doing this can help you see a lot of schools when you don't have all the other "noise" (and work!) of application cycle. It gives you time to check out places you didn't consider before. Some will still come down to "this is still a no for me" but others might surprise you. You will also be more informed when you go back the following year to the schools that made the cut. Sometimes revisiting those will solidify your favorites of the ones you choose to apply to.

Perhaps your circle of friends isn't that diverse or everyone is talking about it because someone in your circle everyone wants to be like sends their kids there. In my circle, nobody is talking about either of those schools.

What does this even mean? Easier? For whom? Are there students on a less rigorous track at SR? Yes. But there are also students who are doing the same level of academics as other top schools. My very strong academically challenged SR student did extremely well at college admissions. Her best friend had set her expectations lower based on her curriculum. I actually think my kid was at an advantage because the resources for strong academics are there, but but because the diversity of academic levels, there was less competition with in the school.
