It is simpler to take my bag with me and check it.

Why would this bother you at all? Just take it off as soon as you get the bag from baggage claim. You're not pulling it through the airport with a tag on the handle. You literally never have to touch it since it's checked.

Are you this high maintenance in general?

I live in NYC, those are extremely uncommon here.
