I got a hormonal IUD at 40, my periods were dry heavy and cycles were getting weird. No period since about 3 months from insertion four years ago. GYN says will check hormone levels at 49 when it’s time to take it out. We can then insert a new one or see if I’m menopausal.

I did not ever get tested for anything. My cycles got shorter at about age 48 and I my last period at 50.

The irregular periods are really stressing me out. Was there anything that helped you predict when they would start? I feel like I have to wear a pad or period underwear all the time.

Mine was irregular for a good 7 years or so. Then 2 months before I turned 54, it stopped That was it, no real symptoms

OP here. Dr wanted to check for a uterine polyp and found nothing.

Drs always do this. They just want to bill your insurance, to be honest. This is why I stopped going to Drs in the US.

The Dr isn’t getting $$$ for the ultrasound but I think it’s defensive medicine. Basically, any bleeding that’s irregular they’ll send you for an US to look for issues with the uterine lining. I think they could do a better job communicating about these issues. They often also do an endo biopsy. It seems like the vast majority of the time it’s just perimenopause but they don’t have other tools.

I’m 52 and cycles have been 17 days to 60 days, heavier, lighter, etc…it’s disconcerting no question.

I think it’s 51

45 is earlier than average for actual menopause.

+1 the average age for menopause is 51.

Perhaps pp was thinking the onset of perimenopause?

Normal menopause can range from 45-55 but average is 51.

Uneven cycle lengths are not uncommon in perimenopause. If you are unusually concerned, a phone call or portal message to your doctor should put your mind at ease. An appointment for that reason alone isn’t usually necessary.

I started having hot flashes, palpitations, and night sweats at 38. My cycle shrunk to 21 days by 40 and stayed that way until 45 when I’m now having cycles as long as 9 weeks.
