I hired someone to come and build furniture in the summer in Florida and I gave him a bottle of water in addition to the payment, but no tip.

Don't give money to people in debt. That just goes to extortionate creditors. The only thing that helps them is bankruptcy as soon as possible.

I just had a guy powerwash the house and didn't know if I should tip him or not. I wound up not, but it still ate at me a bit. I hate this tipping culture.

No. I will sometimes tip repair if the do something ususual like move stuff in utility room to get behind the washing machine, etc. I have started tipping $20 if they wear a mask in my house.
