Yeah, didn't you all see the recent news story about the dad who drugged the tweens? One was able to text her mom for help/come get them.

Yup, until that story I probably wouldn’t have blinked at a parent saying phones will be put away/taken at midnight or whatever. But now it would be a hard pass from me if a parent tried to mandate taking my kid’s phone at a sleepover.

Yet the odds of that happening are slim to none and the odds of them doing something idiotic on the phones are pretty high.

Yeah, but I’m not taking the chance in the event my kid needs me when they are staying somewhere other than my home. Besides, kids who have phones can be idiotic on them at any time not just sleepovers.

When you send your kid to someone’s house for a sleepover, it is with the understanding that the parent responsible for them is able to meet all of your child’s needs and that is who they need ask, not you. What did you do at sleepovers when you were a teen and needed something? Kids don’t need to have mom constantly available in an instant every second of their life. If you don’t fully trust the other parent to meet your child’s needs, whatever those may be, then don’t do sleepovers there.

Great, don’t send your kid then. Does your kid 12 yr old have her phone with her all night at home? Why would you think it is a good idea for multiple 12 yrs old sleeping in a basement to have cell phones all night?

But obviously the OP would let parents know she will be taking phones starting at 10 pm (or whenever) ahead of time and if you aren’t ok with that then you have the option to decline sending. Her house, her rules.

You are a paranoid idiot, with a phone-addicted child.

Here’s a thread for you:

Good night and we’re still getting nervous even at that age and may want to discreetly tell her parents they want to go home. That being said, obviously, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking the phones away so no shenanigans happen, but sometimes important just to think about the situation holistically

Ah, so this is why kids bring extra old phones to these parties- so one is burner to “turn in”!

So lame.

To take phones? Agree.

You're hilarious. No.
It's lame if kids need phones to not be bored and are so addicted that they need to bring a spare.

Not sure joke. You and I are agreeing.

Make sure they and their parents know this ahead of time so there is no balking.

You could decorate cupcakes as an activity… premade the cupcakes and leave them out frosting and assorted toppings. They’ll love all the sugar.

I suggested taking them
At midnight. If they’re bored they can go to sleep.

Kids will get super-bored without their cell phones.

Only "screenagers," as my teen calls them. Kids today, just like always, are totally able to have a good time - in fact they generally have a better time - without phones, so long as their parents have ensured proper in person social growth. This sounds like a problem with your parenting and now your kid, not with kids in general. On the other hand, make sure you let their parents know if they won't have access to their phones; many parents expect their kids will have their phone and will be concerned or upset if they don't get anticipated responses.
