That is most definitely not true for Sligo Creek and Woodlin. Can't speak for the other schools.

Yeah, but Sligo Creek and Woodlin are exactly the kind of schools OP isn't interested in. They seem to be serving white students fine, but other students groups are not scoring well there. Equity issues aplenty at both of those schools.

Did you look at the actual data for the Takoma park schools? The differences between white kids and black kids in achievement in test scores is stark. Perhaps the differential is smaller than in other schools but there is still a dramatic difference in achievements

That's not what the NYT article says. But that's not really to OP's point anyway. The is the average but that cluster, Blair and Blair feeders, has a really high concentration of high achieving Black students. Plus her child would have access to apply to all the DCC magnets and all those schools have also have a high concentration of high achieving Black students. These are schools like Wheaton with PLTW which steals kids away from other magnets each year.

Some of those schools have a higher low income population than others. Not sure what else you might mean.

Some of those schools have low tests scores for every race.

Black parent here. We absolutely love Rock Creek Forest. 19% Black so does not quite fit your requirement but very diverse. Worth a look.

[Yes, I know that schools can change, but I would still like to start doing our preliminary research now.]

Our budget is probably ~1.25M for a minimum 4 bdrm/2.5 bath house and we are trying to figure out which MoCo areas to look at for housing. [We could afford to go a little higher than that, especially if interest rates go down a little, but don't want to have a stressfully high mortgage.] We want to be in an area zoned for an elementary school that is diverse and has *at least 20% Black students* (because we do not want our kid to feel isolated or singled out) AND where Black subgroup scores are high on standardized tests. We also want to make sure that ES feeds into a decent (including for Black students) MS and HS. We have had an extremely hard time finding a school in DC that meets our criteria--the only real options we have found are some of the bilingual charters that require an great lottery number (which we haven't gotten, so far) or Shepherd Elementary--but I'm hoping that MoCo has more to offer us.

What I am not looking for are suggestions of schools that have generally high test scores, but where the poster does not know (or, probably, care) whether there is a significant population of Black students OR whether the Black student subgroup scores are good. I, too, know that the best test scores are generally found in the highest income areas.

Thank you, in advance, to anyone who can provide helpful information.

Agree with the general recommendations to consider Takoma Park/downtown Silver Spring and environs, but if you are looking at specific demographic ratios as a baseline, I would suggest going to the MCPS school data page first. Select "elementary profile dashboard" and you can look at data from various elementary schools.

https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/school-profiles

To figure out which elementary school(s) to look at (since there are many!), you could look at a PDF map of high school clusters - for example, the map for the Blair cluster identifies the elementary schools in that cluster and you can use the data profiles to look at the elementary schools in that cluster. This is useful if you already know what areas in the county you are considering. What is referred to as the Downcounty Consortium (or DCC) is probably what you will want to focus on. This includes 5 high schools (Blair, Einstein, Wheaton, Northwood, and Kennedy) and their feeder elementary schools.

Good luck!

But those links don't tell you how well the black students do in the school cluster.

There's a link somewhere that has the performance of each subgroups per school. But, here's the PDF (long) that has some info per school by demographics.

This is where my sister's kid go and they are biracial (black/white). They choose that pyramid so that their kids would have diverse friends who are also doing well academically. It was a big reason why they avoided the Bethesda area.

Agree with the PPs’ recommendations, and avoid W also.

Honestly, we are at New Hampshire Estates/Oak View which are Title 1 schools and they really work to identify and nurture kids talents. Very well run schools with class sizes smaller than most private schools. Black families are professors, professionals in federal government, and doctors and lawyers paying off their loans. The single family home neighborhoods never had covenants so they have been integrated since they were built post WW2.
