What kind of hat and fancy hat you wear can’t hide the cruelty that goes on at horse races.
+1 Turn down the invitation. Educate yourself about the horse racing industry and the monstrous animal cruelty that these spectacles perpetuate. Its absolutely heartbreaking. Once you understand what you would be participating in by attending, you may reconsider whether it's something that you want to get all gussied up for.

You are out in a field with very uneven terrain so you need something sturdy even when dry. Take layers for changing weather. If you are more comfortable in pants, do pants with a dressy top, pretty sun hat, and fancy scarf.
