I interpret it as an expression of a Libertarian, patriotic mindset and as a nod to our region's past as the birthplace of the American Revolution. Of course, I'm sure triggering pearl-clutching people like those posting on this thread is also a motivation for those that display them. Pretty cool that Virginia offers it as a license plate theme.

I assumed these were politics related for many years. Now that a mixed race LGBTQ couple who are our neighbors, have recently gotten these tags, I’m wondering if I was incorrect.
What is going on with the popularity?
I mean, the Gadsden Flag is about as political as it gets, going back to the founding of our country.
I do agree it's kind of lost its meaning. And its use to signal hostility to fellow citizens is beyond the pale.
It's not used to signal hostility. It's literally about limits on government power. If anything, it fits perfectly into a leftist oppressor/oppressed narrative except for the fact that it calls for people to be independent in thought and action.

It's a stupid catchphrase about government overreach, so of course it goes down well with the rebellious young, libertarians and MAGAs.
