Why should anyone begrudge the dedicated government worker their due? If you want to hold a microscope to the ill-gotten gains, unearned perks and luxury treatment of tax-payer-funded scroungers and dilettantes look at public school teachers who don't even have to work year round! Heck, they don't even have to keep their skills current because shrewd school districts absolve them by preventing their acquisition of contemporary text books and the latest pedagogical technology. What a cushy gig!

We are retired Feds and I have siblings that are very jealous of our pension. Even my mother makes nasty comments. We are comfortable, have financial security and the absolute best medical insurance in retirement. My siblings are Drs, lawyers, educators….names you would know. We were considered more pedestrian and were looked down on. We saved, slow and steady. We lived within our means and the resentment is obvious now that we are all older.
And, we did it on our own. We were snubbed by family every step of the way.

Look I am not going to argue every govt worker is saving the world but surely you are not going to suggest everyone who works in a no profit is either?

We can argue all day long about whether someone who keeps one family from being evicted is doing more public service than someone who implements an effective antipoverty program but none of my friends who work at anti poverty organizations would suggest that they can do it on their own without help from the govt.

Same. We could afford to retire in our mid 50’s too if we could just have consistent access to feasibly priced healthcare.

My relative who works for a non profit seems to mostly be serving his donors!

Someone who’s peak salary was $100k would get $33k if they stayed for 30 years and retired at 62.

You want to repeat that to my husband at NIH, who has worked on cancer, Alzheimer's and cardio-vascular disease? Researchers who don't work 9-5, because their living model organisms do not replicate, die and give birth 9-5? Researchers who work weekends, nights, according to the requirements of the experiment?

When you or a loved one falls sick with a dread disease, bear in mind you criticized the people who identified key pathways and discovered life-saving treatments and medications.
