I am the poster. Lunch wasn't provided at my HS. After 5 lunches, maybe 2-3 afterschool snacks (im talking fries at mcdonalds with my friends), and then hanging out in the weekend, there was nothing left. I think i skipped lunch once or twice a week because i KNEW i wanted to go to the movie theater on the weekend, and a movie ticket was 2 lunches, or I really wanted a new tshirt and thats 2 lunches right there. I absolutely still got a part time job to supplement my allowance AND i learned to value every dollar.

What year was this? Which metro region? If you'd taken lunch from home would your parents have deducted the cost from your $100 per week? That's just a lot.
Plus you had a part time job? I hope you saved a lot.

Have done 1$/per year of age since he was 8y or so. Moreso for money management than allowance (he has things he is responsible for around the house (trash, dishwasher, cleaning his bathroom, keeping room tidy, assisting with yard work, etc.) This money goes into a Greenlight account and he saved about $900 over the years (he did buy a laptop at some point and was good about saving when he was younger/pandemic/etc.) Now that he is a senior and more social, this is his social money for going out with friends/buying for his girlfriend.

He also started working at 15y and that money goes into the bank. By the end of this summer, he will have worked 4 summers, and will have about 15K in the bank that will be his 'fun' money for college starting in the fall. That should last him most (all?) of college - and he will add to it by working in college/over the upcoming summers during college.

My dad used to give me a year's worth of tuition, room & board/rent, food/meal plan, car insurance, and then some extra, all at once.

My kids don’t get an allowance but do get a little money from relatives. My eldest started refereeing at 13 and I expect our other younger kids to start working as soon as they can if they want pocket money.

My eldest has a cc attached to our family cc that he’s welcome to use if he goes out with friends. He is incredibly frugal with it though. Will use it to buy a meal and maybe a movie ticket but will otherwise use his own money to buy “treats” like popcorn or dessert.

FWIW, I did not get an allowance growing up either but just spent the way my parents spent once I started earning money, which was to be generous with necessities (good healthy food for example) but frugal with treats and luxuries.

well yay for you. that's not the point. the point is most of us don't have $100 to give our teens each week.
