They would pay $98 instead of $350.

My child took Health 1 last year for free, not sure why it was free, but this year MCPS started charging.
DC is in a magnet program and getting Health out of the way is a smart move, since this class is more of a nuisance that just wastes time.

Montgomery College summer classes are not free for MCPS students.

Also if you have an IEP. I could have sworn my child’s case manager said he could retake core classes for no charge via edmentum. I think I’d listen to your school before listening to people here.

Yes there are always exceptions to any generality. IEPs include items that cost money so things may be paid for for a student with an IEP that would not be paid for for a student without one. Some schools with specific fundings (community school, Title 1 etc…) also offer free summer programs. Run of the mill student with no accommodations at a school with no extra funding will need to pay for summer classes.

Teachers of summer school classes are paid at their hourly rate (annual salary divided by 1560, the number of hours paid in a 195 day school year). So, yes, teachers are being paid more now than they were during the summer of 2019, the last time summer school tuition was charged.

That was not the case before Covid. Maybe it’s changed. Definitely worth asking the school.

Arent classes at MoCollege free for HS students?

Yes, but that’s a state grant and your child has to be a dual enrollment student.

Nope. Especially not free for kids who failed the first time.

Kids have gotten used to failing and “being able to take it in the summer” because it’s less work and more fun to goof off during class.

Now they get to feel the pain of failing—or at least their parents will.

+1

Also, $350 is completely reasonable. Taxpayers don’t need to fund your kid being able to graduate early or that kid who failed Math because they had 40+ absences. Some of these kids also don’t realize that there are a limited number of campuses (two I think?) and not a lot of space. Key takeaway: maybe they should pass the class the first time.

Health ed is a dumb requirement and some kids like mine take it so they can do things they enjoy like music. Not all kids do summer school to graduate early or they failed.

I am not sure that tp should cover..."I want to take an extra music class" either

Mine never did summer school and had plenty of times for electives.

Health is now a required two semesters so that knocks out another one of your electives. This year when I was helping my daughter choose her classes I saw few times for electives Health is now a required two semesters so that knocks out another one of your electives. This year when I was helping my daughter choose her classes I saw how few time for electives they had us compared to when I went to high school in the late 90s.

There are many kids who need summer school because they struggle in school and don’t have parents with resources that can pay for expensive tutors. And, it’s far cheaper to pay for a summer school class than an extra year in school to make up failed classes. And given the effort to get to summer school, do you really think the student population is comprised of kids who don’t go to school in the first place?

It's still a choice, not a necessity.
