Rebuilding my 16x24 deck now by myself. The newer pressure treated lumber doesn’t last as long as the old stuff. Make sure there is no wood contact with the ground at all. Make sure the top of the wood is all taped to prevent moisture penetration. Use Trex style decking on top.

Kind of hilarious that a...(checks notes)...deck? costs as much as a major surgery

this is what worries me. contractors can really screw you over.

As to lessons, make sure you are comfortable with the payment structure. Companies are very different with respect to how much you pay at which points of the process. If you pay too much up front, there is nothing financial incentive to get your job done. A bad reference or review isn’t a deterrent.
