There are some kids who do not want a big school like JR. It isn’t an apples to apples comparison. They’re both good schools but very different!

Thanks. Found the SAT (https://dcps.dc.gov/publication/dcps-data-set-sat) and AP (https://dcps.dc.gov/publication/ap-score-data-sets) spreadsheets. The averages are indeed as you say. I would have expected Banneker to do better but I take it that there is a very long thread from a few years back on that topic.



Why do you think your child will score in line with others? I have a Banneker student who has scored 5 on APs and 1540 on SATs. You’re aware this is a Title 1 school. The kids are all very studious and bright but there are some kids who have tough home lives. If your kid doesn’t have these challenges, s/he will score high. Test score track HHI closely.

Yes, all the available Walls SAT data is based on classes admitted by exam. It’s pretty to think that the school itself is responsible for the scores, but the fact is that kids who are good at taking exams tend to be good at taking exams.


The PARCC scores haven't declined that much for the new classes, so I don't know that the SAT scores will, either.


I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I feel like Banneker is so different from other schools that test scores can’t really be the deciding factor. Do you want your kid to go to a historical black highly academically intensive school with tons of homework and less “traditional” HS culture like sports? Or do you want your kid to have a more traditional and flexible experience in a less academically focused culture?

They might have a list of college acceptances from 2020 or so somewhere on their website, but it's not like a private school where they circulate a list as a recruiting tool. Anecdotally, this year I know of acceptances at Cornell (full ride), Yale, and the AU full ride people showed up at the school for a public announcement a few weeks ago. My Banneker student is not in 12th so that's all I have confirmation of so far this year. Can try to find out more.

No.

The AP number is the percentage of kids with an AP score who scored a 3, 4, or 5. That percentage is higher at J-R than Banneker.

Also, not everyone takes the SAT since some kids take the ACT instead or take neither the SAT nor ACT since many colleges are test optional.


OSSE requires all high school students to take the SAT. It’s the reason 11th-12th graders don’t have to take PARCC. It’s given for free in school.

In DC all HS students take the SAT in school in a regular school day unless they purposefully are absent that day.
