Subject: Tell me about an expensive vacation experience that was worth every penny!
We threw a lot of money at Japan both in terms of flying there and traveling around Japan. Highlight by far was swimming with dolphins in Mikurajima.
We also did scuba diving in Palau which was incredible.

We did this in Alaska a few years ago with our middle school and elementary school aged children, and it’s still one of my favorite life experiences. We did the dogsled on the glacier, played with the dogs, then went to another glacier and took in the views, the kids drank the melted glacier water, and ran around. It was stunningly beautiful and one of the highlights of an snacking trip.

Overwater bungalows and very very private beach bungalows with pools. Lovely but still cheaper than Bora Bora, but we often felt like we were the only people around which felt luxurious.

Safari in Tanzania. Go2Africa booked us at Asilia properties. Had a jeep and guide to ourselves at each location. Saw thousands of wildebeests cross the Mara, got within a few yards of a lion and her cubs. It was perfect.

Snorkeling is so bad compared with diving. My 10 yo was eye to eye with a sea turtle today. I would never go back and neither would my kids.

I think the best money we have spent is on private instruction for our kids in niche things. Private ski, well worth it. This week for spring break we did private scuba instruction for our youngest, same person we used for our oldest. We have been diving with this person for almost a decade now, and at this point we are friends and he goes out of his way to make every dive special.

We did that in Seward. It was the most I ever spent on something per hour ($2K for about 1.5 hours) but totally worth it and my kids say it was their favorite part of our trip.

I clicked on this thread to say helicopter in Alaska! Stupid expensive and worth every penny. We didn't do the glacier dog sled but flew to the glacier and it was wonderful.

I wish I threw money at Machu Picchu. I did it the cheap way and deeply. I went to the salt flats of Bolivia the expensive way and it’s the only way to go. Amazing yet still adventurous travel.
