There are people who scam people looking for a place to rent by advertising vacant properties as their own or under their management. People who rent under those conditions don't know their landlord has no legal right to the property.

What did they do? Any movement to do it here. In the DMV? I understand a tenant overstay could require eviction (though not sure why we make it so hard), but why can't we call a break in a break in and charge someone criminally? These stories are traumatic.

One of the reasons we moved from Clarendon was that either our back yard or front porch would accommodate squatters each weekend. Drunk kids from the suburbs would park in our neighborhoods, couldn't find their cars, and crash on our property. It was amusing the first time but not subsequent times after cleaning up vomit.

This is a big reason why there's a migrant crisis at the border right now. Those who want to emigrate to the US are learning via TikTok how to claim asylum at the border or after crossing illegally onto US soil. US laws absolutely allow them to claim asylum and the laws have been this way for decades.
The difference? Previous undocumented immigrants simply did not have the knowledge about our asylum laws. They didn't have social media circulating this information giving them step-by-step instructions on what to say when they got over the border.
