A counselor would have maybe helped “tailor” his activities for top colleges, but I believe there’s a lot of downside to curating a kid.

Because the school is small, 34 seniors, some colleges don’t seem to admit anyone from here. The strong AP offerings help with this lack of recognition.


+1 the couselors' lists for each of our very different students were spot on and their predictions accurate. Very solid advice.

Also had a great college counseling experience at Gonzaga. Extremely helpful parent and student sessions in junior year set us very well to be able to apply early. Excellent and insightful essay review from the counselors. They addressed all of the questions our son had and helped him keep his ED/EA timelines.

DS is attending DeMatha and their college services seem pretty robust and I have no plans of paying for a separate consultant.

But we are very realistic about our finances and DS abilities so we’re just hoping that the school can help widen our horizons on what schools to apply to since UMD is DS dream school. But I know that’s a low bar for a lot of other families!

OP here - I was told that many families in private schools enlist college counselors at the cost of $10k+. We are only considering Catholic schools in DC to apply to next year. Was wondering if this was a private independent phenom or if many Catholic families also paid for additional college counseling.

Visi's is fantastic. It just falls into place, regardless of where your DD falls. I would not pay for that on top of tuition.

The very targeted counseling is one of the perks of private school. Why pay extra? I think it's a good move for some public high school students/parents though.
