Well I’m 50, and the aunts and uncles I’m still close with still give me gifts. They also give a gift to my husband and each kid. But is isn’t ALL of them. These are ones I invite to my house multiple times a year. I don’t think all this has to be “equal.” If there are some you are actually close with (which may pop up again as they get older) that is perfectly fine. I don’t think these aunts and uncles were sending me gifts while I was in college and moved away. But once I came back to the same state as them, we got close again.

I normally send birthday checks to my neices and nephews ($100 for years then reduced to 75 a few years ago, then 50 the last couple of years). Most, not all, acknowledged with a text). Other than that, i rarely hear from any of them throughout the year. This year, my youngest nephew is 25. I'm now officially in my late 50s and figuring out my plan for retirement. So, I decided this is the year for no more birthday checks. I still acknowledged with a card. For Christmas, I typically give a few small gifts plus a 50 gift card. Thinking this year will just be the gift cards.

But I would still give gifts if their parents invited me to a graduation party or other celebration, so it’s not a hard and fast rule.

I stop with college graduation— unless there are parties for milestone birthdays.

I have to say, though, that well into adulthood, I occasionally received birthday cards with 10 or 20 dollar bills in them from older relatives, and I truly cherished those gifts — and the love and caring that they represented.

Mine stopped after I turned 18. I received a gift at college graduation, (not graduate school graduation), wedding, and baby shower, but nothing for birthday after 18.

My sibling who is in her mid 30s still goes on free luxurious vacations with one aunt and uncle 1-2x a year. My aunt and uncle pay all her expenses for the trips.

OP here. Thanks for replies. I think I will stop giving money gifts ($100) for them. Youngest is 20 and oldest is 30. I sometimes get an acknowledgment but oftentimes not. Will send HB text or card.

Certainly will send gifts for significant occasions, weddings, baby etc. but not for birthdays any longer.

I stopped sending Christmas and birthday gifts after 18. Love my niece, love my brother, but 7 times out of 10 I don't get any acknowledgment. It gets old.

Op is giving cash. Are you telling me you would want your aunt to take you to the zoo at age 30 rather than $100?

Just know that if you have young children that receive birthday gifts from their aunts and uncles, that will likely stop when you stop sending gifts to their children. It does not matter if your children are 1, 10 or 18.

That's crazy! If my kid is 30 I wouldn't stop if my niece was only 11.

Op. Each family does things differently. If I was close to the family members and could afford it I would continue. But if you can't just have the conversation.

I've only given cash, but it's customary in our family to stop at 18.

I'm 40 and I still get a card and a little money from my Aunt. It's nice that she thinks of me, but if she wanted to stop no one would begrudge her that. Do what works for you.
