NP here - I was with my twee son at the supermarket and we were in different lanes. He was caught stealing some stupid candy which he took into the bathroom!!! The clerk came to me to tell me. I was so ashamed. My kid told me the reason he did this is because I will not buy him that crap! After he was confronted, he would not leave my side, he was so scared. Hopefully, he will never do it again.

DC is 13.

I don’t know yet why.

School plans to suspend him for a day tomorrow.

I think suspension from a learning environment is stupid (but will do it if that’s what they impose), but kid should have to work to pay back 2-5x the value of what they stole.

Get behind the suspension- he can do educational work at home. stealing gets you kicked out of the community. End of story. Don’t do it again.

+1 on this is approach. It's not about being excluded from a learning environment, it's about the fact he can't be trusted in that environment so he has to stay away for a day.

NP- I disagree. I think suspension is appropriate for violent kids and bully rough kids but not for this kid. Suspension is ridiculous in this case. He should be going to all his classes and learning.

Defenitely make it the most long, boring day ever. DC has to do their schoolwork and if it's online, sitting next to you so they can't use the device for any fun. Also, dc needs to work to pay back what they stole, and it should be something hard and labor intensive, possibly dirty. Perhaps raking and bagging the leaves from the whole yard (if you have one) or scrubbing all the grout and baseboards in the house and cleaning the garage or basement. The idea is to connect the thought of stealing with the thought of 'hard' labor, as a deterrent.

I went through a candy-stealing phase in middle school and got caught by a clerk at the 7-11. She didn't call the police or anything but it scared the shit out me and I never stole anything again. I went on to become valedictorian of my high school and a public interest lawyer so there's hope for your kid 😁

Ok, this is probably fair.

Both of my kids said this was a thing in middle school with a lot of kids. It’s not right but doesn’t sound uncommon. It’s good the school is punishing him. I’m only telling you this because it doesnt mean your kid is going to be a criminal. It sounded like these kids were doing it for thrills. The school store was constantly being closed because of theft and behavior issues when my kids were there.
