Not only that, but think of the chemical process on their developing body. The smell alone should serve as a warning not to put it on your teen. omfG!

Don't do this Op. Don't facilitate this. If he were 18, spent his own money, came home one day having this done - that's one thing. Your job as a parent is not to chase this and make it happen. It's not good parenting.

OP where are you located? We have been down this road and I finally gave in to my 14 yr old. It actually looks good and has held up well.

Oddly, my kid has exactly the curls that are popular now and hard to achieve with a perm, but he hates it, and always wants the shortest cut possible to get rid of the curls.

I haven't seen perms happen since 1989. And boys wanting them? Really? Wow. Are perms a thing again? I didn't even know you could get one.

So many boys who used to have straight hair suddenly have coifed curls. You will hear lots of moms claiming it was puberty, but the local hair salons will tell you otherwise.

Yes, this is real. My kids have some texture to their hair so it’s not as obvious as it would be if they had pin straight hair.

I’ve let them do it because I know it’s a trend and my daughter takes the cake when it comes to wanting to follow trends in clothing, skin/hair care, get manicures/pedicures, those gd Stanley cups, etc. that my boys are neglected in comparison.

My family owns a salon and lots of boys are wanting to come in and do this and we warn them that because their hair is growing about an inch a month and many of the boys at that age are going to puberty. It’s not a great idea. It’s gonna look great for about 3 to 4 weeks, and then obviously the 1 inch of roots will be straight again!

My boys have perms. It is ridiculous. We’ve gone to a couple of different ppl because it’s expensive.

What I’ve learned is that the boys really want looser curls and those are pretty hard to get and have them stay for any length of time so they start out almost looking like Justin Timberlake from the 90s but the curls settle down in a couple of weeks.

Most salons have someone who perms. Ask for a consultation before scheduling an appt. Have your son take photos of what he wants. His hair also needs to be long, uncomfortably long if it’s super straight.

Just an fyi, some hair doesn’t perm well. Super straight, thick hair is difficult.

I honestly can’t believe teen boys are willing to endure the perm process to achieve a hairstyle, but if there’s ever a time to experiment with your hair, it’s when you’re a teenager. If you have a good experience at a salon, update us to let us know.

Do they still smell like they did in the 80s? That's always what I imagine my mom smelling like.
