Yes, this is real. My kids have some texture to their hair so it’s not as obvious as it would be if they had pin straight hair.
I’ve let them do it because I know it’s a trend and my daughter takes the cake when it comes to wanting to follow trends in clothing, skin/hair care, get manicures/pedicures, those gd Stanley cups, etc. that my boys are neglected in comparison.
