Macalester has great STEM and humanities. But no engineering. Lots of STEM kids go to top grad schools for PhDs.

If he likes an intellectual vibe, what about Reed? It's in Portland. About 40% acceptance rate. If he likes that, Bard is virtually similar (but out in the country) and more like 60%.

Davidson does not offer EA but could be a great option for ED1 or ED2.

What do you think would be targets or likelies for 4.0 UW, 4.6+ Weighted, 1550+ SAT, excellent ECs, will have around 11 or more APs w 5s so far

Looking for
- midsize or smaller school (maybe 8,000 or fewer under grads)
- likes an actual defined campus
- prefers urban or urban adjacent locations
- prefers collaborative vs competitive environment
- they like an intellectual vibe but also want an engaged student population that is involved in a lot of activities
- has a few academic interests - so wants STEM and humanities
- open on geography - except not really into the south -eg, no FL, Tx
-would be full pay and can do it
- not athlete , not URM
- do have legacy at one T25, which they will apply to

It seems like most schools are reaches now and it’s hard to interpret much from our small school’s SCOIR data since often there aren’t a lot of data points or the data is old



Northwestern or WashU/Vanderbilt ED/ED2

two strategies:
A Lock down a t30 during ED. Maybe U Chicago, Rice or Vandy.

B Do enough EA that you have a yes in hand before you submit all your t15s. EA suggestions Denison, Davidson, Santa Clara, Pitt, Mac, GWU.

+1 on the Holy Cross suggestion and look at Clark in the same city. I know a TJ grad at Clark who loves it.

OP here - thanks for all the great responses

Some of these she’s looked at / been thinking about

- PiTT is on the list

- GW felt not campus-y enough but we weren’t on an official tour so maybe we missed something ? Otherwise loves DC

- Macalester felt like it maybe didn’t have as much STEM emphasis?

Will be a NMSF so I feel like USC and Fordham like that but I don’t know much about Fordham for STEM and I think she is on the fence about NYC for college

I wish Rice was in a different location- she really isn’t interested in TX

Is USC really a target? I think it is a reach for everyone. At my DC’s big3 no one gets into USC unless they are majorly hooked.

For excellent ECs are they national awards? Or just run of the meal EC like year book editor, varsity captain, etc? For targets - University of Richmond, Lehigh, USC, Villanova. For safeties - Gonzaga, University of Denver, University of San Diego, Loyola Marymount Los Angeles.

I’d include a rolling EA as that helps take the pressure off. They are often larger schools but may have an honors college. We used U MN and Ind Bloomington although I’ve heard it helps to visit MN. For size, William and Mary and WashU both fit (as low reaches). Some of the SLACS mentioned may be too small. I’d visit as many of the schools as you can, we found it helped narrow the list and made better why X essays.

I'd add Muhlenberg as a safety, though probably not urban enough. Goucher in Balt. Hood (in Frederick) and Gettysburg are both right in the town, but not quite a city.

Yes excellent scores! and the kid Should land in T20 or T30. However I’ve seen those scores get yield protected in RD rounds. So if he doesn’t do REA or ED well, and doesn’t land a T30 school, a kid with those scores could end up at University of San Diego or GWU. I’ve seen it happen. Which is fine. But it isn’t Brown or Georgetown.
