The last thing we need is more threads on UVA, UMD, or people’s thoughts on rankings. Cali has some of the best schools in the country without much coverage on here.

First off, nobody's stopping you.

Second, the way the UC app is, lots of people apply to multiple campuses, because it's only another application fee. My kid checked off multiple campuses. As did other DC area folks I've talked to in prior years. Only at the last minute did my kid decide not to apply to Irvine as well.

Many people care about the UC schools. I’m interested even though my kid did not apply there

I grew up in Northern CA and now live in Northern Virginia. I think this is a good call in terms of relative intrastate prestige, and even the locations are similar.
