I have a friend who did this -- knew the marriage was basically over, but was mid-30s with one kid and wanted two kids and preferred the idea of having them be siblings with the same parents, even if those parents were divorced. It is way easier in that situation to just have another child with the guy you are already married to and have one kid with, and then divorce. Your other options are to divorce immediately and hope you find someone else to have a kid with before you hit whatever age you want to have a baby before (and then have to do the whole blended family thing), or divorce immediately and then have a kid on your own, which can be especially disruptive and confusing for your existing kid.
It sounded kind of crazy to me when my friend told me this is what she did, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. If you are a woman in your early to mid-30s and already have a kid with your husband, it honestly just seems dumb to get divorced immediately if you'd really like another kid. Financially, personally, timeline-wise -- you might as well get a second child out of that relationship before you move on. It's efficient and tidy.

Seriously, what a horribly selfish act. On a lesser note, look what a mess Khloe Kardashian made of her family by having a baby with serial cheater Tristan Thompson, and then years later hired a surrogate to carry her second child with Thompson. So the kids would be genetic siblings.

It's not what I would choose but I don't think it's necessarily worse for the kids. In my friend's case, both parents are loving and attentive parents to both kids. They just absolutely should not be married to each other anymore. In some ways I think it's good because their kids will always have each other now, and I think it might be easier to navigate their family together than it would have been for their older DC to do that on her own. Plus they got a few more years together as a family before they were divorced, where both parents were focused on bringing the second child into the family and creating a good dynamic between siblings and between both parents and the kids, before officially separating.
I actually think it kind of makes sense and might not be inherently selfish.
