Assisted living is different. The long term care Medicaid was horrific. Lots of neglect, possible abuse with lots of unexplained bruises. Residents would sit in the areas for long periods with no staff around. Some staff tried hard but there were not enough.

Why are people surprised at the care? Are any DCUM posters working as care home aides or any of their family? It's a bad job, even if you pay more. You end up physically a wreck and do you really want to do personal care as a job? Nobody wants to.

Sorry to hear this. My father was there in 2007-2008 and they took excellent care of him. I think it may have been under different ownership back then. He constantly had visitors between his wife, me, my brother, my mother and friends. That may have had something to do with it. Nothing got past us.

Sterling Care Bethesda has been wonderful for my father-in-law. The care is excellent and the facility is well kept. The nurses are very nice and helpful and he always seems well cared for. I am so surprised how nice it is for a place that accepts Medicaid patients. They seem to have a mix of Medicaid and self-pay.

Nicest and Medicaide never go in the same sentence, you know.

PP’s are correct that finding a place in a facility is a moving target.

It is better to go in as a Medicare patient and then switch to Medicaid once qualified.

“Fancy” architectural details do not improve patient care.

Every place is understaffed. The best you can hope for is to find a place that somehow still has at least line personnel who care about the patients.

PP’s are 100% correct that things are better when the staff/admin know you visit regularly and are watching.

Beware of facilities trying to get financial guarantees from you or third parties.

Facility experiences vary with time. A facility that did OK with one parent can degrade to do very poorly with another in just a short time.

I’m a new poster and we had to pull my mom out of Montcare Potomac. They largely ignored her, were inconsistent about medication administration and just mean. We removed her against doctors orders. She was dying in there.

Montcare is fine. My mom is there now

Hebrew Home is infested with mice. The rooms are 85 degrees and no way to adjust the temperature. There are multiple complaints about rodents in the rooms, do your research before choosing here.

If you’re there now, keep a notebook VISIBLE and make a big sign on the front of the notebook with your full name. They cannot take away personal items! Make it a log book to write down the time and date and name of everything that happens during your stay. Literally every single interaction especially medication times. Ask lots of questions about everything going on. Make note of the time you push your call button to when it is answered and what for.


Montcare nearly killed my mom. I was there almost daily for months and even I missed some of the shady things happening. The staff would talk about me within earshot but I called them out on that. I made sure they knew I was watching everything.


My mom is near 80 on Medicare but I am still getting calls from bill collectors because Montcare didn’t get her paperwork right. Honestly I would like to sue the place. They are not right.

Please, protect yourself. Ask questions and keep detailed notes on everything that happens during your time there.
