Do you need to drive? Southwest has cheap flights BWI GRR, rent a car and drive from there.

This one Rust Belts.

LoL. If you've been to Canton, MI and Canton, OH, you probably:
1. have strong opinions about which Great Lake is the 5th Best Great Lake (hint: it's Erie)
2. whether it is a mansion or a shack with an outhouse, you refer to your family's holiday residence by the water as a "lake cottage"
3. You, or someone in your family, has A Harrowing Tale of Struggle on or near the Sleeping Bear Dunes

The real question is what qualifies as "Up North". Growing up in my family it was north of M-21 (Grand Rapids-Flint).

Birthplace of Rutherford B Hayes in Fremont Ohio

(Or, just power through the full drive. Stop once at the first OH turnpike rest stop and again at the last. That's all you need!)

I would absolutely go to Canton but that’s not for everyone.
