Plenty of schools don't have Greek life and their students are all able to make friends, go to parties, etc. It's such an unnecessary thing.

Frats have always been this way. It’s not unique to any one school, which you should realize.

You just want to disparage an entire university.

Hey, y’all. OP just wants to know what happened most recently at UMD that resulted in a stand down on all Greek activities. Does anybody have any insight?

News flash - frats are optional

I was in a sorority at UMD in the 90s. My sorority followed all the rules. No hazing. But the fraternity hazing was bad. And dangerous. It sent my boyfriend to the ER. My feeling is that it makes sense for them to do a thorough investigation rather than take chances. My son who is a current student chose not to pledge but if he had I’d be grateful for this decision. I’m sure innocent fraternities and sororities will be cleared to resume activities soon. I don’t think UMD will abolish the Greek system because they own all the houses on fraternity row.

Michael Shannon reading the letter on youtube is one of the greatest things you'll ever witness.

I know there are some colleges who do things differently, for example Rice University I think builds community around housing in some way. I do understand the need for belonging at that age, but surely there is a way to do it without hazing. It is interesting to me that in at least one case the black fraternities aren't included in the ban and I always thought they had hazing problems also -- maybe they have rooted that out successfully and if so, maybe something could be learned from that. Also, I believe there are some co-ed fraternities that are built around professional goals.
