I am disappointed. DC has high stats and got merit from three other schools so far. MD was the favorite for many reasons and we can afford it, but it would be nice to see some recognition for academic achievements and future potential.

During the CS open house last April (During Maryland Day), the presenter said that for the class entering in Fall 2022:
9000 of all applicants indicated CS
3000 admits requested CS
600 of those were admitted to CS
450 accepted

This year 600 were direct admits since very few can transfer in later, so more will be accepted. In the Facebook UMD Class of 2028 Parents Group, an admissions officer said CS has the highest yield of any major or program. Is it the 75% implied above? That would be hard to believe with an overall yield in the low 20s. Those figures alap imply a 5% overall acceptance rate to the program. I can’t vouch for the stats but that is what she said. And even if they are off somewhat, it gives you a feel for how hard the CS direct admit is.

Harder to get into CS than get a scholarship. These are decided by different committees too.

Step one: Admissions to UMD - congratulations she's in
Step Two: Accepted to CS, almost impossible.

Scholarships: Based on her merit. Merit aid is decided in a very different method than admissions. UMD doesn't have a ton of merit aid to give. So your student has received many positive acknowledgments of her academic talent from UMD.
