My teen is typically at a friend's house whose parent is a night owl. SOOOO thankful that she will bring him home at 11p/12a. I am looong asleep.

You need to talk to the parents of the kids you are inviting. I would not care but one day we have early sports practice so getting home at midnight would be a no.

This is why my kids sleep over a lot.

But yes I either pick them up, the Uber, or sleep over.

VA doesn't allow those under 18 to drive after midnight.

My Junior/now Senior was/is always home by midnight.

My sophomore doesn't stay out late. He usually hangs out with friends on a Friday right after school--they might go to a rec center to play bball--he's usually in by 8:30/9pm and then they'll meet up online to play. He's like his brother --lots of weekend sports/games so he doesn't typically stay up late. He socializes with friends during day/earlier in the evening.

OP here. Yes, DS has been playing sports and there were away games ending at 10. Thankfully we had teammates who lived right by us and they offered to drive DS home when they saw I had a younger child. While my freshman is my oldest, they were on their last or had an only so they didn’t mind giving my son a ride home. They offered and insisted on it, which I appreciated.

I’m sure one day when my youngest is in high school, I would not mind driving her friends or teammates home if not out of the way.

yes, it gets really crazy and then it gets much better when they can drive.

My older two are 17.5 year old twins who drive themselves everywhere.

However my youngest is now 14 and is super social. I'm finding the late night pick-ups more painful this time around---I'm getting too old for this!

I have a middle schooler who I need to pick up at 10 tonight and am dreading it. I just try to limit my “yes”s to special occasions. It’s rough!

OP, you have to shift your schedule older when you have teens. We have weeknight games that don’t end until 10pm sometimes!

My 9th grader stays out until 11 pm on weekends - sometimes 11:30 depending on the event. I'm a night owl, though, so I don't really mind.

My 10th grader stays out until 11pm - anything later is too late for me. I get tired too! But yes it seems normal to me based on her experience. Weekends only of course.

As for the party, everyone should be picked up. You don’t need to drive anyone home.

I don’t like waiting around to pick up kid late. I tend to be up late but settled in and not in the mood to go back out.TBH, I find it very annoying. But I do it. 11 is usually the latest I’ll do. Rare occasion maybe 12.

I think there are two issues at play: teens do hang out later and your family are not night owls. You will need to adjust. Good luck.

Yes we pick up our freshman from friends’ houses at 11 PM as do other parents. Sometimes we’ll carpool and sometimes we’ll let him walk.

I don't think OP needs to sacrifice her health and sleep too much by catering to a lot of late nights. Birthday, sure. Other than that, she can pick a frequency she can live with.

+1. And you certainly don’t need to drive everyone home after the dinner. Parents can pick up.
