Big fish small pond was SO good for me in college. I had a lot of anxiety and confidence issues. I could have gotten into a "better" school but would have struggled mightily being middle of the barrel at that phase in life. Best wishes to your Dc.

For in-state kids, it probably seems like a poor value compared to the UC's. But if you're coming from out-of-state and your kid isn't Ivy League material, I think it can be a good option, especially if you get merit or aid.

Visit the school. Also have student consider how they feel about the distance from home and family with possibilities of not coming home for Thanksgiving. The school might be a good fit but its location from home might not be.

Someone post on DCUM within the last year of a student who went to USD - and then off to Stanford Law.
It was on my sons's list and I really liked everything we heard about it. My son withdrew application after getting in to his ED school.
Our private college counselor - smart kids and it gets a rep in the CA area as not worth it due to cost - but good merit. A thing that made it appealing was the more relaxed vibe.

I think DC should visit and see what the student culture is like, as an accepted student.
Culture shock would be a thing coming from DC.

I think USD sounds like it would be a really good place for your DC - congrats on the acceptance and great merit! It is a really pretty campus and San Diego is a great place to be a college student (or live, for that matter). Enjoy!

There is no bar to entering the Engineering major, which is great. My DC got $19k merit but chose to attend another school that gave more merit.

Actually, anything in the Top 100 is good. There are 3000 4-year colleges, so it is in the top 3% of all colleges.
