Are your parents college graduates? Since 2022, VA tech has had a goal of 40% of its students being the first in their family to go to college. For programs like engineering and business, this makes it more competitive than other schools if your parents graduated college.

Not saying they’re the only school that does this, but it definitely has an impact.

Yes, happened to my oldest 2 years ago (non-engineering 4.83/1560/35 blah, blah, blah) and all non engineering in the top 10 of their class. While they found it amusing, I can see how it could stress someone out.

Yield protection most likely. A bunch of very high stat kids from our HS are waitlisted at V Tech the last couple of years. Most view it as a safety however and have no intention of attending. I think V Tech just wised up to this fact. Just unfortunate. Cannot blame the school or kids, just the whole ratings game that needs to be played.


Happened to my kid.

In at places several top 10 schools, waitlisted at VT which should have been a safety.

It sucks, because the Virginia waitlists to multiple schools completely wrecked out plans for attending in state universities.

Yes, my kid gets to go to a much higher ranked school than VT, but financially, we c9mpletely lose out because the plan and the years of work were focused on in state tuition.

I wish the schools would not play these games, and would just use an objective admissions metric like the SAT.

It is called yield protection. Colleges waitlist students with very high stats because they know the student will get into other schools that are better than theirs and end up going there. If you are really interested, you should have shown interest throughout the year (open every email, attend their department open houses, etc.) as well as send in a strong letter of continued interest once you got waitlisted.

Perhaps you shouldn't have thought of it as your "safety school," for starters?

Hi, did you work your tail off on their supplemental essays? Or did you treat it like a safety? That’s the typical reason what high stats kids are wait listed at VT.

I am ranked number one in my class, captain of 2 varsity sports team, and founder of the only student-led club in my school. So I am guessing they aim for around 70 students per year.


And within school of design is industrial design which had 28 students enroll both instate and oos last year.
