DP, and not unless said activity does not interfere with her ECs and wraps up early. She has to be up at 5:45 for school. Generally speaking, she goes out with friends on Fridays/Saturdays, occasionally Sundays.

Middle schools is different…but why do you have to be up at 5:45 for 7:30 school? Do people in FCPS live that far from school?

Bus pick up for some is 6:30 am. Kids who attend AAP centers may live further out.

No, I don’t think that is common at all.

My kids are generally busy with school and sports on weekdays (as are their friends)- but they are definitely allowed to socialize when they can and want to. They sometimes attend school basketball games or things like that with friends but aren’t out late at all. They do get together with friends pretty much every weekend.

My kids are allowed to socialize on weekdays but the older they get the less they do because of sports practice and homework. In middle school, there so little homework that they often hung out after school. At HS, they will sometimes go for snacks after school or go to study with someone at their house or something, but generally prefer to get their work done. The socialize on weekends but probably less consistently than I did back in the 1980s when it would have been weird for me not to have a social thing at least once per weekend and often twice.

My kids are allowed to socialize on weekdays but it's rare they choose to do so because of their homework and activity load. They have gone to a couple school games after school and hung out after school on half days or at the end of the quarter.

They also know it's difficult for us to pick up on weekdays and taking the metro and walking would eat up an extra hour or more of their time.

Wow, why are you so angry? No, my kids generally wouldn’t be able to go out to dinner with a friend on a school night or attend a weeknight basketball game. We prioritize education and that means making sure homework is done nightly and getting enough sleep to focus the next day. Plus one of my kids has to be up at 5:50 am on school days. My kids’ friends parents also share the same values. We are happy and it works for our family. Plus, my kid is a straight A student and teachers love them.

So…my kid is a straight A student and another is at a top 5 college and somehow they can attend a weeknight basketball game.

What values are you talking about? I am not aware of any “values” that prohibit weekday socializing.

My children get tons of freedom to hang out. Never would they sneak out though. They have respect!

This sounds a lot like us, but I wouldn’t respond to OP with yes. Socializing IRL is super important and kids also have priorities. During the week school and sports so we tend to say no to weekday hangouts. Of course there may be the occasional exception. Weekends off season is more flexible, in season it’s pretty much sports, sports, sports. Beyond that, weekends are for family, homework and friends. Friends maybe 2-3 times per month. My kids are just too busy but one of them would love nothing more than to eat/sleep/breathe friends. Oh. and by 16, they must get jobs, so there’s that too.

We had a no socializing during the week (mon-thurs) except for special events during the senior year. They were pretty free range before that. And we have allowed quite a lot of exceptions for various reasons.

I used to teach in a rough neighborhood. For better or worse, some of the strictest parents did not let their kids do almost anything because they were scared of gangs, drugs etc. I don’t know if it worked as a long term strategy but it was not unheard of.
