We still use pull-ups at night and they take a shower in the morning to clean up.

I've read that kids often need more sleep during growth spurts. Their body is working overtime producing cells, and thus they require extra rest. It makes sense, honestly -- one reason babies sleep all the time is that their only job is basically growing so they just eat and sleep, because they will double in size over the course of a few months. So it makes sense that an 8 or 12 year old who is shooting up an inch or suddenly building more muscle mass due to puberty may also need more rest for a time.

Just like sometimes kids are hungrier and eat more, sometimes they are more tired and sleep more. It's fine.

How generous....

This makes it easier to get back on schedule for school.

It does but it’s not worth it. The earliest we have to be somewhere is about 10 am. If nothing they get up when they wake up.

DCs shower at night before bed. It makes mornings much easier. Plus they play sports/ practice so prefer they shower before bed. On weekends they are free to sleep as long as they want unless we need to be somewhere. I make sure they brush their teeth at some point but they can stay in pjs if they want

Yes I let them sleep in on the weekend, even if it means missing something we have planned. Getting enough rest is just as important as exercising and eating well. It's not a luxury, it's a must.
