Stockholm, Oslo or Amsterdam. Or, off the beaten path, Svalbard.

I asked my son last year and he said New Jersey. What am I doing wrong lol.

Yeah, eight year olds don't get to pick family vacation locations in our family.

I took my kid to various cities between the ages of 8 and 9. It doesn't matter where you go OP and Copenhagen is fine. I didn't do the Louvre for example with an 8 year old. We did these things
An afternoon at a playground or park
A boat / river cruise
A cafe for some hot chocolate or whatever
A museum of some sort (the modern art museums usually have something more interesting for them to see/experience)
A bike ride

Include Louisiana Museum for adults and kids. Great spaces!

I came on here to suggest Copenhagen, Malmo, and Stockholm! An 8 year old can handle museums and all that but also have fun wandering around, eating ice cream, and visiting playgrounds. CPH is great for that.

OP Here - thanks for all the thoughtful responses! I do think my DC will remember the feelings and some memories - enough to hopefully light a spark in them.

Sounds like we'll stick with Copenhagen and I'll really dig in and research it! Admittedly, since my partner and I have already been to all the other 'major' cities we'd also like to travel somewhere new since this is our first international trip since prior to having children - 8 years!

An 8 year old will absolutely remember. I went to Europe for the first time at 8 and it was magical. I remember everything - jet lag, boat rides down the Danube, the Sound of Music Tour, teensy towns and castles on the hill.

OP, I recommend Copenhagen or Amsterdam if you want to stay in that “general” area of Europe (I use that phrases completely loosely).

+1 Yeah I would ask your child. DD at 8 had lots of opinions on where to go. She gets to pick one destination a year and loves that she gets to take “her” trip. Ask if there is a city in Europe they’d like to visit.

Agree, would go somewhere iconic like Rome, Venice, London or Paris and then go to a the country/beach in that country for a few days.

At 8? Kifs will remember the trip. Do you remember every detail as an adult? Of course not but still nice to do!
