OP here. Thanks for the feedback, everybody.

Sounds like the way to go is -- when the time comes -- look for an assisted living place that doesn't require a buy-in, and then try to make the savings last as long as possible.

As he may need more care the cost would increase but there is no buy in, just monthly costs. I can tell you my mother was in a Rehab in NYC which was putrid and literally criminal, they kept everyone drugged and 4 in a room until I got her out and into a Sunrise. Sunrise is a freaking Ritz compared to that (Rehab and we not even Medicaid and would have been $675/night when insurance stopped paying, which they did)

Did your mom fall and need rehab? Why did the insurance stop paying? Or did the Medicare coverage time out and $675/night was the gap?

So good that you were able to move her - hope she is having a good adjustment.

We did not share how much money my dad has with the assisted living. It’s none of their business.

We definitely did not want a CCRC, which sounds like a snake oil racket.

Assisted living will charge based on what level of care your dad needs. Showering, medicine management, etc.

We pay about $9,000/month.

My grandmother had a Medicaid bed in a nursing home in a room shared with three others. She had one corner. The whole facility smelled like urine.

Think this is more likely to occur when the home is owned by a corporation. Their bottom line - maximize profit for shareholders, not quality of life for the residents.

PP again- this is a one bedroom bc it was both my parents together. Imagine a studio would be substantially less a month, maybe $1.5-2k less.

I think it's enough. I've looked at places that are not luxury and are about $5k-$6k a month. Vitality in arlington is one. He would use his $26k then draw on assets each month.
