You can usually tell the difference between the homeless that can’t care for themselves and young people looking to score drugs. Those types usually have signs.

There’s a regular homeless person near my daughter’s school in NYC. He’s usually just sitting against the wall. She buys him something every day and sometimes sits with him. These are people and just like people everywhere there are good and there are bad.

Yes, Roma in the DMV. And the kids behave as overseas - suspiciously calm, quiet, able to sit still seemingly for hours (based on my going to/from them at Pentagon City Mall). Overseas, the kids are given alcohol or downers to quiet them.

Have been here for years; the topic comes up frequently enough. For example:

- anyone remember the “affluent beggar” thread? She was profiled by a major news source (was it the Post? The WP ?

And soooo many other stories and posts. Many Investigative journalists follow them from time to time. Most are not homeless.

But the intersection beggars, in particular, have been investigated and mostly found to be organized rings.

I am not saying it is every single begger. Of course the people sleeping in tents under the bridges near Rock Creek Park are truly and sadly homeless (though I don’t often see them begging). Some beggars are homeless.

Most of the intersection beggars are scammers, I believe.

Gullible people who give to beggars are the ones who encourage all that scam! Stop being gullible!

In Nashville, they have 2 beggars who are always stationed outside of a restaurant we frequent. I never carry cash, and when I told them that when they approached me. They then said they take Venmo!
