Umm have you lived in Buckhead? We loved living there, but the crime now is no joke. Car break ins, people trolling around in backyards, package thefts are common. Not to mention the more serious crime around the night clubs and sketchier areas. It has in fact gotten worse over the past few years.
Atlanta is the 8th biggest city in the US, if you want crime free please move to hillbilly town Kansas or something.

Buckhead isn't what it used to be. We avoid it at night now.
PP, Oglethorpe is not in Buckhead, it's in Brookhaven. The campus is a good number of miles away from any sketchy areas.

Georgia State offers a fine education. We know multiple people with graduate degrees that are smart and accomplished. For undergrad, I'm not sure you're going to find cohesive school spirit. GSU is pretty much a commuter school and the area isn't great. Having said that, our DC took a few online classes there over a few summers and enjoyed them.
+1 I live Atlanta and agree with your assessment of Ga State.

No one offered evidence that Oglethorpe is a better school than Georgia State because no one claimed Oglethorpe is a better school than Georgia State. Multiple posters did, however, say that they would personally choose it and listed the (in my opinion valid) reasons they would make that choice.

Do more kids live on campus for Oglethorpe? That would make a huge difference, if your kid wants a more typical college experience. I don't think a commuter school would be very fun for an 18 year old. If that's your only option, that's one thing, but it's another to choose a place where that's true.

I don’t think Oglethorpe is better than Georgia State, and I have not seen anyone offer any evidence of why Oglethorpe is better. All I have seen are arguments for the quality of life of neighborhood as compared to downtown. OP is your DS still a junior? If so then for next year apply early to be considered for additional scholarship opportunities.
PS - Oglethorpe is adjacent to shopping and dining, it’s near the Marta and all the fun restaurants in Chamblee and Buford Highway. I personally would prefer that for my OOS kid’s experience than downtown ATL.
Yes, a Junior. We are putting a list together now and he was adamant about Atlanta being on it. This sounds like a great compromise, I love the tuition part of course, and he'll be thrilled about the shopping/dining aspect!
My senior DS just competed in scholarship weekend last month. It was a great event which offered programming, a chance to participate/compete in a college class led by a professor, some wining and dining, and a chance to meet other prospective students. If your son has high stats he’d most likely be invited and could win a substantial scholarship.
The campus is pretty, it’s fenced and has a gate they lock in the evening. I was impressed with their attention to detail. They also seem to have good internship placements around Atlanta.
