It sounds like OP's family is way less formal/posh than her boyfriend's family. That's why she's having issues.
Okay but the reality is she is overthinking it.
If they are a-holes it doesn't matter what she wears and if they are nice it doesn't matter what she wears.
Besides, ask your boyfriend, they are dating right?
You think she can't figure out if she should wear gym shorts or business casual?
I think she is asking for guidance because she's nervous, feels out of her element, and wants to make a good impression. I can't see why you find this confounding or offensive. Good for you if you've never once in your life been nervous about an event, even a teeny tiny one.

I don't know - he'll probably decide the morning of. He comes from preppy, classy people. I come from dirtbag people. So this is no big deal to him while it's a huge stress to me. One time, he got invited to the opera last minute and went. He literally had like three hours notice, and just whipped up an outfit. I wouldn't even know what a person wears to an opera.
People show up in jeans at the opera.

It's just my mother, and we consider Olive Garden fancy and I'd wear whatever I was wearing that day - joggers and a hoodie/tshirt or jeans. We're more diner people, but we don't actually go to dinner. We went out with a group of friends the day I graduated from HS - I think that was the last time we went to dinner.

A blazer does a lot for women. It's a much bigger bang for your buck than any cardigan or sweater. It's powerful, stylish and also simple to wear. You can go with any style that suits you - be it oversized, fitted, colorful or neutral. You can dress it down with a tee or sweater and jeans or dress it up with a blouse or dress. You can accessorize it with a pin or brooch. It will allow you to immediately feel more powerful when faced with intimidating people.
For a March brunch I think you can go with navy. What's your height and size, and everyday style? I can make some more specific recs.
Thanks, I would really love specific recs! I've never gone to church. I'm 5'7" and either a 2 or 4 depending on the brand. A coworker told me once that my style is Rory Gilmore?
