Your concern is legitimate, OP. Sexual assault, gun violence, frat hazing and petty crime are why campuses usually have their own security, blue light call boxes and safe buses that operate after hours.
Your best bet is to tour campus, ask hard questions and assess the vibe for yourself.
My kid is at George Washington. The campus is clean and has its own campus police and EMT (Georgetown does too, I understand). It feels safe, but I was a little concerned last fall when that alleged murderer escaped from the GW hospital and the campus went into shelter-in-place for a few hours. My son's only concern was that he couldn't go to the dining hall to eat at his usual time.
